Bunny Approved! Cruelty Free Makeup Cheat Sheet!

Vegan and cruelty-free makeup is on the rise. It’s estimated that vegan cosmetics will be a $20.8 billion business by 2025.

That’s great news for an industry, but with so many cosmetics companies and new brands hitting the market regularly it’s hard to know which brands are vegan or cruelty-free. Furthermore, some brands are owned by larger parent companies that do test on animals. In fact, if brands sell product to China or Brazil, they are required by law in those countries, to test on animals. Depending on your level of commitment to cruelty free, this is an important detail.

Below is a quick reference guide to cruelty-free makeup. If the brand is in bold, it is also vegan.

We also recommend the Bunny Free App, available on iPhone and Android! Just enter the brand name to see if the brand tests on animals or is cruelty-free!

Below is our Cruelty-free and vegan cheat sheet. Are we missing something? Please comment or send us an email so we can keep the list current.

Beware of the following product that do still test on animals:

L’Oréal is a tricky brand. They are claiming to be 100% cruelty free across all their brands, but they make exception to that claim if their products are sold in China, which requires animal testing on all beauty products. L’Oréal will also use ingredients tested on animals prior to March 2013. It’s a tricky little loophole and misleading for the conscious consumer.

Sephora

Note: Sephora does test on animals when required by law, aka for products sold in China.

Shiseido

Beware! Many Shiseido products are sold to China and they do test both ingredients and finished products on animals.

Here is a list of cruelty-free brands owned by Shiseido, also approved by PeTA.

  • Bare Minerals
  • Buxom

  1. Thrive Causemetics – vegan and cruelty free! I’ve only got their setting powder, but I LOVE IT. I’d been looking for awhile for a cruelty-free dupe for the Makeup Forever HD powder without a lot of success, but I seriously think this powder is even better. I’ll definitely be purchasing more from Thrive in the future.
