This is going to be the year, no scratch that, decade for real environmental change! I can feel it! Maybe it’s the people I surround myself with that makes me so optimistic about the future, but I don’t think so. Every week I hear someone knew saying they trying to reduce their dependency on plastic in their home. Or I learn a friend of mine is experimenting with a plant-based diet for the first time for either animal or environmental reasons or both.
What really gets me excited is writing these Friday High-Fives because I learn about people and companies making really amazing changes. It helps me find the silver-lining in what can otherwise seem daunting. For example, I could just cry at the devastating pictures of the Australia fires. It’s heartbreaking. But, then I read a story about a family who has saved over 900,000 animals in Australia (you’ll hear more about them later), and I feel better knowing there are good people out there.
I hope these Friday High-Fives inspire and lift you up like the do me. So, without further ado lets get to celebrating this best eco-fabulous stories of 2020, so far.
Golden Globes Go Vegan for Environmental Awareness
Our first high-five, or should I say “award” goes to the 77th Golden Globes. Last Sunday, Hollywood’s most celebrated actors met in Beverly Hills for the awards, and for the first time ever the entire meal was 100% plant-based. The intent was to bring awareness to “sustainable lifestyles as our world moves towards climate and environmental insecurity.” High-five to the Golden Globes for spreading environmental awareness in front of a world-wide audience.
The Irwin Family Has Saved Over 900,000 Animals
The next high-five goes to the Irwin Family. You may remember Steve Irwin, aka The Crocodile Hunter. He was likely the most recognizable and influential environmentalist and conservationist our time. After his death in 2006 his family has continuing his legacy with the Australia Zoo. The zoo and the crew members who work there are dedicated to wildlife conservation.
The Australia Zoo and animal hospital are not under threat by the devastating forest fires, but are busier than ever. The hospital staff has helped save over 900,000 animals, many of which were injured in the fires. My heart breaks for Australia, but it’s comforting to know we have the Irwin’s there to help the defenseless animals. High-five Irwin family and team.
Give Back Box Creates New Method of Waste Diversion for Retailers
Our third high-five goes a company taking some our most challenging problems: shipping waste, clothing and textile waste, and people in need. Introducing Give Back Box, givebackbox.com. Founded in 2012, Give Back Box gives cardboard boxes a second life. At the same time, providing consumers with boxes and shipping labels to donate unwanted clothes or household items. This is circular consumerism at its best. High-five to Give Back Box for creating a solution to multiple issues plaguing the environment.
Canada Bans Dolphin and Whale Captivity
High-five to Canada for banning the captivity of dolphins, whales and porpoises for the purpose of entertainment! The Canadian Parliament passed into law that aquatic animals will no longer be inhumanely kept captive for aquatic parks, captive breeding, or the import-export market. This has been a long-fought battle by animal activists and for good cause. High-five to Canada! The dolphins are smiling.
Joaquin Phoenix Vows to Rewear his Golden Globe Tux Entire Season
For the fifth and final high-five we go back to the award shows, but not just the Golden Globes, all of them! That’s because actor and environmentalist, Joaquin Phoenix chose to wear sustainable designer Stella McMartney to the awards, but he has also vowed to wear the same tux for the entire award season! If you love it, repeat it!
Here’s a tweet from designer Stella McCartney:
This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud to join forces with you… x Stella#JoaquinPhoenix #GoldenGlobes
High fives to both Joaquin and Stella for supporting (and designing) sustainable fashion.
Have a wonderful weekend, Friends!
