If you’re not familiar, Heirloom Tomatoes are those odd-looking tomatoes that come in a variety of shapes and colors, and they are usually segregated to there own bin away from their traditional red counterparts.
They may look questionable at first glance, but don’t let their lumpy exterior fool you. Heirlooms should be considered the purebred of tomato farming. What makes heirloom tomatoes so special are the hand-selected seeds passed down from generation to generation.
Each season farmers choose seeds from the tomato plants that reap the best fruit. Farmer can then plant the ideal seed to produce the best-quality tomato based on color, shape, or flavor. They are often grown open-pollinated, meaning they are pollinated naturally without GMO’s or other chemicals.
They are the healthiest, tastiest and most organic tomatoes you can buy. Heirloom tomatoes typically yield less fruit and are more delicate due to their thin skin, which also means they have a shorter shelf life and are best to eat in season.
We are right in the middle of Heirloom season, so I hand-selected the best recipes featuring the Heirloom Tomato. Just be sure to try these recipes before the summer is over. Heirloom season is short but packed with juicy flavor.
Cheesy Heirloom Tomato Tart (Vegan)
I love two things about this tart from Rainbow Plant Life: the vibrant colors and the guilt-free indulgence. Aside from the puff pastry, this tart is packed full of healthy ingredients, including, protein from the Tofu Ricotta. This would be fantastic for a small dinner party appetizer or romantic dinner for two.
Roasted Red Pepper and Heirloom Tomato Soup
This soup has me daydreaming of a crisp and lazy fall day. Hard to believe you only need 5 ingredients and 30 minutes to make this hearty soup. If you’re not in the mood for soup in August, make this now when the heirlooms are ripe and freeze to use later when the weather cools. Then invite a friend over for dinner and reminisce on the your favorite moments from this summer.
Vegan Fried Green Tomatoes
I’m seriously thinking about frying up a batch of these and streaming “Fried Green Tomatoes” the next time I have an evening to myself. That movie is one I can watch over and over, and I’m reserving these for a night alone so I won’t want to share the fried tomatoes.
Roasted Heirloom Tomato & Vegan Pumpkin Seed Pesto Toasts
Go ahead and call me late for dinner, because I will probably still be savoring every bite of these toasts. I love the twist on traditional pesto by using pumpkin seeds.
Heirloom tomatoes used to be exclusive to Farmer’s Markets, but due to increased popularity, you can find them at almost any grocery store. And, if you liked our Farmer’s Market Pasta Salad, I suggested substituting the cherry tomatoes with your favorite Heirloom.
